Advantage to rookie Newgarden in morning session

The Firestone Indy lights series today visited Barber Motorsports Park Birmingham Ala. for the first open test of pre-season.
12 drivers were present, 9 of which were rookies, all battling it out to see who had an edge ahead of the upcoming first race on the streets of St Petersberg which will be held 27th March.

Series veteran Gustavo Yacaman set the pace for most of the session with a best of 1'15"97, which until 20 minutes before the end was the fastest time, just over 2 tenths of a second faster than
the trio of David Ostella, Esteban Guerreri and Josef Newgarden who all posted a time of 1'16"2
So with 20 minutes left on the clock 20 year old rookie Josef Newgarden in his Sam Schmidt Motorsports car hit the front and ousted Yacaman from the top spot with a time of 1'15"67.
With only 12 cars present there was sometimes little action on track but with just 10 minutes remaining Connor Daly found some pace and leapt up the order to 5th with a respectable time of 1'16"49.
