Following on from the previous 2 days, of mainly wet WSR 3.5 testing, it was the turn of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup drivers, who were faced with similar conditions making driving quite tricky. And it wasnt long before the first red flag of the day, when after 15 minutes of running Tech1 driver Javier Tarancon had an incident in sector 1.
When the red flags came out again, after an hour was completed, Fortec Motorsport driver Felix Seralas was quickest after posting a time of 2'02"33, Yann Zimmer (+0.2), Melvin Mckee (+0.59), John Bryant-Meisner (+1.28) and Timmy Hansen (+1.62) rounded out the top 5.
First to break the 2' mark with a time of 1'59"05 was 16 year old Swede Bryant-Meisner in his Koiranen Motorsport car.
At the 2 hour mark, as the track was drying, there was a very different look to the top of the order, One Racings Vittorio Ghirelli was at the head of the field with a time of 1'50"92. Brit Will Stevens (+0.76) was 2nd followed closely by Kevin Kleveros (+0.97) and Fortec Motorsport team mate Felix Sarrellas (+1.07).
Alex Riberas was 5th heading the chasing pack however he was some 3 seconds behind Sarrelas.
With debris on the track at turn 1, after John Bryant-Meisner had hit the barrier hard, the red flags came out once again. Lap times had been sent tumbling with a succesion of drivers taking turns to be quickest as the track had continued to dry, and with 3 hours completed and just 1 more remaining in the morning session Paul Loup Chatin led the way on 1'46"18, closely followed by Alex Riberas, Robin Frijns, Javier Tarancon, Carlos Sainz, Timmy Hansen, Daniil Kvyat and Stoffel Vandoorne, who were all less than half a second behind the Frenchman.
It was a lengthy 30 minute process for the marshalls to clear the debris of the stricken Korainen Motorsport car which left just over half an hour for the drivers to go back out and try to imporve their time and position. First to do so was the Koiranen Motorsport duo of Carlos Sainz and Daniil Kyvat who went 1st and 2nd respectively. Fortec driver Will Stevens was the only other driver to make a noticeable improvement before the end of the session when he shot upto 2nd, after setting the quickest middle sector of all, on way to a time of 1'46"07 with 13 minutes to go.
