Weckstrom edges Sainz in afternoon F.R 2.0 Eurocup test

The afternoon session saw 17 year old Dutch driver Dennis van de Laar the first car out in a first hour that saw little activity on track, with most drivers completing less than 10laps.
Pieter Schothorst was quickest after completing 13 laps with a time of 1'47"03 half a second clear of Miki Weckstrom in second. Karl Oscar Liiv, Alex Riberas and Paul Loup Chatin, who were within a tenth of each other, completed the top 5.

Miki Weckstrom finished the 2nd hour top after shooting up from 20th with 3 consecutive blistering times, all of which were quicker than the previous quickest time of Alex Riberas (1'45"82). Riberas was at the head of a group of 3 drivers, Javier Tarancon and Swede Timmy hansen, who had a best time of 1'45"8.
So the top 5 at 16:00 local time, and with 2 hours still to go, was Weckstrom 1'45"32, Riberas (+0.50), Tarancon (+0.50), Hansen (+0.52) and Carlos Sainz (+0.92).

With 3 hours down Stoffel Vandoorne, who had so far only completed 10 laps, was the new pace setter on 1'45"1. Josef Kauffman driver, and reigning Formula BMW Europe Champion, Robin Frijns was 3rd, half a second behind Vandoorne but just 3 tenths behind Weckstrom, who had not improved in the last hour. Riberas and Tarancon, 4th and 5th respectively, were also unchanged on 1'45"8 just ahead of Interwettens Thomas Jager, who despite being 0.7s slower than Vandoorne, had set the quickest first sector overall.

17:20 (local) was the time when, with 40 minutes remaining, Carlos Sainz took to the track and hit the front again, boasting a stunning time of 1'44"51, blowing away the rest of the field and giving himself a half second cushion to the chasing pack.
A succession of red flags hindered drivers trying to improve their time but Fortec pilot Will Stevens managed to get a clear lap in, posting a time of 1'44"96. Series newcomer Columbian Oscar Andres Tunjo improved dramatically and went a close third on 1'15"09 just seconds later.
Wekstrom took over at the head with 15 minutes left, less than a tenth quicker than Sainz, on a 1'44"45 before bringing out the red flags following an incident in sector 2. Vandoorne was on course to go quickest in the dying seconds, but a mistake in sector 3 meant he finished in 3rd.
